Summer Update

The Power House is undergoing some big changes - some of them long awaited! With many thanks to Alice Ellen Cooper Dean and Talbot Village Trust, we now have new laptops and mobile phones for our Community Team, and our hub now has Broadband! It has been a struggle working in the hub using SIM card network data, so to have this is going to be a gamechanger.

The tech could not have come more perfectly timed as Alix’s laptop bought with UnLtd start up funding in 2018 is now completely unusable after months of limping along! A very big thank you to SPC IT for your excellent advice and provision of all we need. Onwards and upwards!

The hub is looking quite different with its new office installed and painted, and awaiting a bespoke desk to be constructed by Poole Men's Shed. A disabled toilet is now installed in our new Cloakroom that also has bespoke storage constructed by our wonderful volunteer Mike, and new belfast sink and cupboards.

A huge thank you to Tim of Homeworx Dorset for your excellent standard of work constructing our office and Cloakroom.

The first phase of our art studio storage is now complete, thanks to another wonderful volunteer Dave.

Thank you to National Lottery “Reaching Communities” for funding the office and disabled toilet. Thank you to BH Coastal Lottery for the art studio furniture, storage, Belfast sink, and new studio door.

Our creative arts and wellbeing community programme is progressing nicely, with Rachel Huggett’s first Creative Wellbeing course funded by the Community Mental Health and Wellbeing Fund through Dorset Community Foundation and NHS Dorset, our third course starts in September.

As well as our weekly Thrive Arts & Crafts Drop-in, we now have Knit & Natter on Thursdays, 12pm-3pm led by volunteer Frances. And on 14th July, volunteer Mike starts to host a Men’s Meet-Up, Monday’s 1.30-3.30pm.

CoCreate Dorset start their fourth course on 1st October. After working with Poole Museum’s commissioned artists INSTAR as part of their community participation work to design and create pieces for the new 7m sculpture that will span a triple height space in the heart of the museum as part of their exciting redevelopment, The Power House is now looking forward to working with Hazel and Oliver from the Museum of London Archeology for their oral history of Poole project.

More information about INSTAR’s project can be found here.

Bournemouth Repair Café came back for their third session in our hub on Saturday 17th May.

Thanks to BCP Council Thriving Communities and Dorset Community Foundation Neighbourhood Fund, Bel continues to lead Cornerstone Patch growing our volunteer base who together have brought the Patch to life.

After four years, finally we have an accessible ramp installed this July, by Tim of HomeWorx Dorset, and funded by National Lottery Reaching Communities.

More about these and more in What’s On and News pages.

The Power House hub activities and events are dependent on volunteers. We are so thankful for every little and every lots of time people give. Teamwork makes the dreamwork. If you are interested in being a part of creating a welcoming and warm community space, and/or developing your skills with us, whether regularly or on an ad hoc basis, please email hello@thepowerhousepoole.org

We were sad to say goodbye to Penny and then Avril earlier this year. We are so thankful for all both enabled and the time dedicated through very difficult working environment as the hub was still being set up.

We will be re-recruiting for our Communities Team in the next couple of months. Keep an eye out on our website and socials for announcements.

Once again, thank you to National Lottery Reaching Communities for making all this possible … and we look forward to the more on the way!
